Basic Couching Course

Our contributing partners in the A.J.K.A. basic coaching course:
Local-government of Fejér County
Hungarian Karate Association (HKA)

Background:

  • The Hungarian A.J.K.A. Shotokan Karate Association started its two-year karate instructor training course nearly a decade ago, adopting the curriculum of the accredited training at the Long Island University (LIU).
  • The course lasts two years, and the LIU issues the appropriate degree at the end of the term on the basis of the credit points gained through the work performed.
  • The professor of the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences of LIU and Sensei László Sáfár 8th dan, the Chief Instructor of the A.J.K.A. carry out the training and the concluding examination.
  • The training is complex, and in addition to the knowledge directly related to the Shotokan style it also covers training theory, gymnastics, biomechanics, sport science and other areas to the necessary degree.
  • The possibility of nostrificating the LIU degree is currently being examined.

Current problem:

  • Government Decree no. 157/2004 requires that only an instructor holding at least a basic coaching certificate, which is to be checked by the Hungarian Karate Association (HKA), perform coaching.
  • Those who have completed the A.J.K.A. Instructor Training Course must have gained the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge, since unless they do so, the by-laws of the A.J.K.A. prohibit them from continuing their instructor practice after the expiration of a certain period of time, but their qualification is currently not accepted in Hungary, thus they have to acquire the basic coaching certificate.
  • Related problems:
    • Theoretical teaching can be obtained at the courses organized by county-level sport departments, but this lasts 1 year, and several attendances a month are required, which poses a significant burden in addition to the instructor's course of the A.J.K.A.
    • There are several overlappings between the curricula of the two courses, although optimal organization would make them complementary.

Integration of the two trainings - basic coach course and certificate from the A.J.K.A.:

  • In cooperation with the Local-government of Fejér County and the HKA, the A.J.K.A. serves as the center for organizing the concentrated basic coach course for its members, which is conducted parallel to the Instructor's Course, and those who take the examination successfully are awarded both certificates.
  • We plan to offer theoretical teaching to participants (provided there are at least 20) by means of 8 weekend courses (on Saturdays and Sundays) in Székesfehérvár, organized by the Sports Department of the County Local-government.
  • The better part of the practical training is identical with the curriculum of the instructor's training, with the exception of the competition theory and practice teaching organized by the HKA, which is offered in the course of a two-day seminar.
  • The examination consists of two parts: theory, competition theory and the selected chapters of the Shotokan karate-specific theoretical and practical curriculum of the Instructor's School.

Time-table and curriculum of the course:

Principles of putting together the curriculum, examination:

  • As for the theory part, we applied the following guidelines:
    • The parts of the general curriculum of the Local-government of Fejér County that are not included in the curriculum of the A.J.K.A. Instructor's School in the required detail (training theory, sport health science, physiology) and those that are included, in less detail.
    • 7+8 hours (theory + practice) are devoted to karate-specific competition theory.
    • The Shotokan karate-specific theoretical and practical curriculum is identical to that of the A.J.K.A. Instructor's School.
  • Guidelines for examination:
    • With respect to theory, 6 examinations, of which 1 is written, on the basis of the topic list compiled by the lecturers
    • With respect to the competition theory part, on the basis of the topic list issued by the HKA (both theoretical and practical)
    • With respect to the Shotokan karate-specific area, on the basis of the topic list issued by the A.J.K.A. (both theoretical and practical
    • Gymnastics examination specific to the given sport
